Welcome to the Fruitport Middle School Band Page! Mr. Rob Finn and Mr. Donald Showich,
6th grade directorsMs. Katie Hildebrand, 7th and 8th grade director 7th Grade Students will be able to do and learn these things by being in this class:
- Review of the basic skills needed to perform on their instrument
- Reading sheet music
- To be able to play in an ensemble and as individuals
- The student will receive continued instructed on posture, breathing, reading rhythmic notation, reading and understanding musical notation and developing listening skills
- Introduction and development in more complex rhythms, new notes, musical styles, musical development, musical terminology and major scales and arpeggios
- Listening
8th Grade Students will be able to do and learn these things by being in this class: - A more in-depth understanding of how to play in an ensemble and as individuals
- The ability to perform and rehearse more complex music
- Expanded learning of scales, arpeggios, musical development and styles, notes, musical terminology, and rhythms
- Continued teaching of instrument and musical basics, to solidify understanding and ability
- Listening
- Using learned knowledge to create music
8th Grade Jazz Band Students will be able to do and learn these things by being in this class: - Being able to perform music in the jazz style
- Proper playing methods, terminology, form and different styles
- Basic jazz theory and history
- Listening to and recognizing several jazz pieces and styles
- Basic improvisation
Students are required to bring to class each day, their: - Instrument
- Folder
- Method Book
- Music
- Pencil
- Assignments, when due
- Practice Log, when due
The students are graded on these areas: Practice Slips are due for full points on Monday and Tuesday of each week. 7th grade students are to practice 25 minutes 5 days a week and 8th grade students are to practice 30 minutes 5 days a week (if they are in jazz band, 40 of those total minutes must be on jazz band music). Each day the students are given 3 classroom participation points if they follow the classroom rules and expectations. Points are taken off as these are not followed. - Riverboat Performance (Jazz Band Students Only): Saturday, May 28 from 2-3:30 p.m.
- Memorial Service: Monday, May 30 at 10:00 a.m. at the Fruitport Cemetary (No percussionists)
- Memorial Day Parade:
Monday, May 30 at 12:00 p.m. Please meet at the FMS parking lot - Band Booster Meeting: Tuesday, June 7 at 7p.m. in the middle school band room
- 8th grade awards ceremony (Jazz Band Students Only): Wednesday, June 8 at 6:30 in the middle school auditorium
